Mukesh and Anil Ambani combined become world's richest
The wealth of the two brothers as also their group companies are based on the information available on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the closing price of the group companies on Tuesday. The net worth of the Walton family, which controls nearly 39 per cent in Wal-Mart, is around USD 72 billion based on the market capitalisation of the retailer, which is USD 184.21 billion. In June 2005, when the Reliance empire was split its market valuation stood at a little over Rs 1,10,000 crore which has since shot up to over Rs 6,00,000 crore.
In March, Forbes magazine had ranked Mukesh and Anil Ambani as the 14th and 18th richest persons in the world. Their combined wealth then stood at USD 38.3 billion, just a little over the USD 32 billion wealth of steel baron Lakshmi Mittal (fifth richest). After today's surge in the stock market, which saw the Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex crossing the 18,000-point milestone with a gain of 789 points, the wealth of the five richest resident Indians too has soared.
The collective wealth of the top five richest Mukesh, Anil, DLF's K P Singh, Bharti Group's Sunil Bharti Mittal and Wipro chief Azim Premji has risen by over USD 28 billion to USD 164.01 billion in less than 20 days. The total market cap of firms listed on the BSE on Tuesday soared to Rs 54,85,247.44 crore, data available with the exchange shows. The market cap stood at about Rs 51,19,729 crore on September 26, when the Sensex hit the 17,000 mark.

The stock market barometer Sensex on Tuesday surged by a record 789 points to cross the 18,000-point milestone as investors took heart from the improbability of snap polls and bought heavily in frontline stocks led by Reliance Industries.
reliance industries ltd. 2600.00 7.38 %
The market set several new records including the biggest single day gain of 789 points at close, as well as the largest intra-day gains of 993 points in absolute term. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex also recorded the second fastest 1,000-point journey from 17K to 18K in nine trading sessions. The fastest 1,000-point journey was achieved in six sessions between 16K and 17K last month.
The news that the Left-UPA committee on the nuclear deal will meet on October 22 only indicated that the Congress-led UPA government at the centre and its communist allies have stepped back from Tuesday's political stalemate, sparking off a huge price rally across-the-board. While the Left parties claimed they had persuaded the government from going ahead with the deal, there was no word from the government. However, RJD chief and Railway Minister Lalu Prasad said: "The government is not falling. There will be no snap poll."
The BSE barometer ended the day at a new closing peak of 18,280.24, a net rise of 788.85 points or 4.51 per cent over yesterday's close of 17,491.39. It also touched new intra-day high of 18,327.42. The broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also flared up to an all-time trading high of 5,348.70 before closing at a new peak of 5,327.25 from previous close of 5,085.10, a net gain of 242.15 points or 4.76 per cent.

All new BSNL landlines to come with broadband
The users can activate the high-speed internet connection at any time, a senior executive with the company told ET. The move is in line with BSNL’s plans to increase its broadband users base. “This will be extended to the landlines being installed even in rural areas – 99.9% of all new landlines will come with this facility,” the executive added.
