Sensex surges 500 pts; RIL, Infy, NTPC, ICICI Bk, ONGC lead


At 14:25 hours IST, relentless buying across all the sectors was pushing the Sensex higher and higher. It gained 500 points while the Nifty surged 150 points. Among the sectors, the BSE Metal, Oil & Gas, Power, IT, Realty, Capital Goods and Bank indices were up 2.5-3.3%. TECk, Auto and FMCG indices went up 1.7-2.3%.

Finance Minister's strong statement on GDP growth and positive global cues were supportive to the benchmark indices. Finance Minister Pranab Mukerjee said India could clock as much as 9–10% gross domestic product (GDP) growth in two-three years and FY10 growth could reach 7.75%.

On the global front, European markets were trading 0.7% higher. Asian markets ended with good gains. Shanghai was up 0.76% and Hang Seng up 1.12%. Straits Times, Kospi and Taiwan Weighted gained 0.35-0.6%.




The 50-share NSE Nifty was trading at 5,123, up 134 points and the Sensex gained 457 points at 17,149. These indices hit an intraday high of 5,135.05 and 17,191.85, respectively.

Top gainers - Hindalco shot up 9% and NTPC surged 6%. Sterlite Industries, Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank 3.5-4.5%. Infosys, L&T, M&M, Tata Steel, HDFC Bank, DLF, HDFC, Tata Motors, Jaiprakash Associates and ITC were up 2.5-3.5%.

Top gainers on the BSE Midcap - Emami, Gujarat NRE Coke, Great Offshore, Sunteck Realty and Sobha Developer went up 5-7.8%.

Top losers on the BSE Midcap - Kalpataru Power, Opto Circuits, Bayer Cropscience, Mahindra Holiday and Corporation Bank fell 1-1.6%.

Top gainers on the BSE Smallcap - AP Paper Mills was locked at 20% upper circuit; JSW Holdings, Adhunik Metalik, Action Construction and Jolly Boards gained 10-15%.

Top losers on the BSE Smallcap - Zandu Pharma lost 14.16%. GMR Industries, Aegis Logistics, NESCO and PVP Ventures declined 3.5-5%.


At 13:12 hours IST, the Sensex was strong in trade with gains of more than 400 points and was consistently holding the 17,000 mark. The 50-share NSE Nifty was also holding the 5,100 level. Both the indices were trading above these levels for the first time in the last six sessions. Further upmove in Asian markets and positive comments from Finance Minister about GDP (gross domestic product) growth helped the markets.

India can clock as much as 9–10% gross domestic product (GDP) growth in two-three years, Finance Minister Pranab Mukerjee has said. Speaking at an event, an optimistic Mukherjee said FY10 growth could reach 7.75%. India, which grossed a GDP growth of 7.9% in the third quarter of this fiscal, is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and a negative farm growth thanks to a dry spell this year is also not expected to adversely impact its growth. The GDP growth for the next two quarters was “likely to be bright”, Mukherjee said.




Asian markets were positive; Shanghai and Hang Seng were up 0.8-0.9%. Straits Times, Kospi and Taiwan Weighted gained 0.35-0.6%.

Frontliners like Hindalco, NTPC, Sterlite Industries, Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank and SAIL were top gainers, up 3-6%%. Not a single share was in the red on the Sensex and Nifty.

The 30-share BSE Sensex was trading at 17,108, up 415 points and the Nifty was at 5,110, up 124 points. The broader indices gained 1.2-1.5%, as about 986 shares advanced while 256 shares declined on the BSE.

Zee Entertainment's board approved merger of ETC Networks with company. The company will consider detailed merger scheme on December 29. The stock was up 0.4% and ETC Networks gained 3.5%.

Heavyweight Reliance Industries surged 3.28%. Among other oil & gas stocks, GAIL, Cairn India and ONGC were up 2-3%. IOC, HPCL and BPCL gained 0.8-1.3%.

Infosys rose 3% in the oil & gas space. TCS, Wipro, HCL Tech and Tech Mahindra went up 1-2%.

Banking stocks like ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank moved up 2.5-3%. PNB, SBI, Kotak Mahindra, Axis Bank and Bank of Baroda were up 0.8-1.8%.

In the power pack, NTPC rallied 5.14%. NHPC, Power Grid Corp, Lanco Infratech, Neyveli Lignite, Suzlon Energy, Torrent Power, Siemens, GVK Power, BHEL, Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Power, Tata Power, GMR Infra and Adani Power gained 1-3.3%.

Hindalco surged 6.37% in the metal space. Sterlite Industries, SAIL, NALCO, Tata Steel, Jindal Saw, Jindal Steel and JSW Steel were up 1.3-3.7%.

Top percentage gainers - Jumbo Bag and AP Paper Mills were locked at 20% upper circuit. Umang Dairies, JSW Holdings, Muthoot Cap, Adhunik Metalik and KSE were up 10-17%.

Bharti Airtel Q3 net profit jumps 36% YoY
Bharti Airtel Q3 net up 42%

MUMBAI: Bharti Airtel's net profit for the quarter ended Dec 31, 2007 rose36.04 per cent to Rs 1,419.84 crore against Rs 1,043.69 crore in the same quarter of previous year. Total revenue increased 41.47 per cent to Rs 6,682.57 crore from Rs 4,723.68 crore a year ago. Consolidated results as per Indian GAAP: The group's net profit for the October-December quarter rose 38.25 per cent to Rs 1,428.56 crore compared with Rs 1,033.34 crore in the corresponding quarter of earlier year. Total income grew 42.40 per cent to Rs 7,017.95 crore from Rs 4,928.18 crore in last year. Consolidated results as per US GAAP: The group posted a net profit of Rs 1,722.40 crore for the third quarter, a growth of 41.74 per cent compared with Rs 1,215.13 crore in the same period of year earlier. Total revenue increased from Rs 4,912.92 crore to Rs 6,963.90 crore in the current year. At 10:42 am, Bharti Airtel shares were up 1.01 per cent at Rs 858.95 on BSE.



Bank of Baroda Q3 net profit jumps 52% YoY
Bank of Baroda net profit for the quarter ended Dec 31, 2007 rose 52.23 per cent to Rs 501.05 crore against Rs 329.13 crore in the same quarter of previous year. Total income increased 35.68 per cent to Rs 3,620.18 crore from Rs 2,668.11 crore a year ago


DLF Oct-Dec consolidated net $544.4 mn
Real estate developer DLF Ltd reported a consolidated net profit of 21.45 billion rupees ($544.4 mn) for the October-December quarter. Its standalone net profit was 6.06 billion rupees. The company, which was listed in the middle of last year, did not give year-ago numbers.

NTPC Q3 net profit falls 15.37%
National Thermal Power Corporation’s net profit fell 15.37 per cent to Rs 1779.9 crore for December quarter, as compared to Rs 2103.3 crore for the same quarter a year ago. Total Income increased 8.4 per cent to Rs 10,093.2 crore from Rs 9,311 crore.

IOB Q3 net profit grew 24% YoY
Indian Overseas Bank net profit rose 24.88 per cent to Rs 308.19 crore for the quarter ended Dec 31, 2007 compared with Rs 246.78 crore in the same quarter of 2006. Total income increased 42.74 per cent to Rs 2,295.35 crore from Rs 1,608.07 crore a year ago.

Sun Pharma share up 6.6% as Q3 profit rises 109%
Sun Pharmaceuticals net profit rose 109.49 per cent to Rs 345.93 crore in the quarter ended Dec 31, 2007 compared with Rs 165.13 crore in the same quarter of 2006. Net sales increased 75.61 per cent to Rs 733.91 crore for the October-December quarter against Rs 417.91 crore in same quarter of previous year. The group's net profit grew 60.10 per cent to Rs 318.35 croe from Rs 198.85 crore a year ago. Net sales increased 48.87 per cent to Rs 803.97 crore against Rs 540.04 crore in the earlier year.

Bajaj Hindustan Q3 net profit up 71% YoY
Bajaj Hindustan’s net profit 71.70 per cent rose to Rs 29.67 crore in the quarter ended Dec 31, 2007 compared with Rs 17.28 crore in the same quarter of 2006. Net sales increased 19.99 per cent to Rs 286.64 crore from Rs 343.95 crore a year ago.

Mercator posts 98% surge in net for Q3
Domestic shipping line Mercator has registered a 98 per cent surge in net profit at Rs 58.72 crore for the third quarter as against Rs 29.69 crore in the same period last year. The company's operating profit grew by 113 per cent at Rs 160.54 crore during the period ending December 7, against Rs 75.44 crore in the corresponding period last year, Mercator said in a release. The company's income from operations in third quarter rose by 7 per cent to Rs 196.10 crore, against Rs 182.93 crore in the same period last year. Besides, Mercator Board has allowed raising 300 million dollars money through foreign currency convertible bonds or through GRD and ADR, the release added

MTNL Q3 net profit falls 97% YoY
Mahanagar Telephone Nigam net profit fell 53.19 per cent to Rs 97.64 crore for the quarter ended Dec 31, 2007 compared with Rs 208.60 crore for the same quarter ended in 2006. Total income decreased 7.08 per cent to Rs 1,326.91 crore from Rs 1428.03 crore a year ago.

Berger Q3 net rises 4.4 pc to Rs 23.25 crore

M&M Q3 net up 67%
Auto major Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) on Wednesday posted 67.63 per cent increase in profit after tax at Rs 405.15 crore for the quarter ended December 2007, compared to Rs 241.68 crore for the same quarter in 2006. Total income of the company grew by 13.86 per cent to Rs 2,980.25 crore for the third quarter this fiscal from Rs 2,617.30 crore for the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal, the company informed the BSE.

Bajaj Auto Q3 net down 5%
Bajaj Auto Ltd said on Wednesday its quarterly net profit fell 5 per cent, missing analyst forecasts, on volatile raw material costs and sluggish sales due to firm interest rates.
Its shares fell 6.5 per cent to Rs 2,223.95 in a weak Mumbai market.
Bajaj, which also makes scooters and leads the market for three-wheeled motorised rickshaws, said net profit fell to Rs 327 crore ($83 million) in the fiscal third quarter to Dec. 31 from Rs 345 crore reported a year earlier.
Consensus forecast for net profit was Rs 344 crore in a Reuters poll of 10 analysts.
Pune-based Bajaj sold 713,443 units in the December quarter, a 3.4 per cent fall from the same period a year earlier.

Hindustan Zinc Q3 net dips 41.20%
Hindustan Zinc Ltd has announced the following unaudited results for the quarter ended December 31, 2007:

Results: SBI, NTPC, Grasim etc

SBI net up 36% at Rs 1,611 crore

The country’s largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI), has reported a 36% growth in its net profit at Rs 1,611.42 crore for the quarter to September, compared to Rs 1,184.49 crore for the corresponding quarter last year. Its net profit was buoyed by significant rise in both interest income and other income. A lower provision of Rs 85.71 crore for the quarter (Rs 321.30 crore) has also propelled the rise in profit. Significantly, operating profit before provisions and contingencies stood at Rs 2,713.22 crore (Rs 2,112.53 crore), reflecting a 28.44% growth.

Interest income for the period under review grew 32% to Rs 11,616.28 crore (Rs 8,799.62 crore) while other income rose 42% to Rs 2,041.94 (Rs 1,437.69 crore). For the half year period (April to September), SBI’s net profit grew 53.16% at Rs 3,037.23 crore (Rs 1,983.06 crore). Operating profit for the period was at Rs 5,074.68 crore (Rs 3,918.15 crore), grew 29.52%. The bank has managed to improve its asset quality significantly over the period.

NTPC Q2 net rises 31 pc

Country's top power generator NTPC Ltd on Saturday posted a 30.64 per cent rise in its net profit for the second quarter ended September 30, at Rs 1,925.49 crore as compared to Rs 1,473.93 crore in the corresponding period last year. Total income of the company for the quarter under review stood at Rs 8,749.2 crore, up 4.35 per cent over Rs 8,384 crore for the same period last year. The net sales stood at Rs 8,016.86 crore in the period as compared to Rs 7,724.30 crore during the same quarter previous year, a growth of 3.78 per cent, a company statement said.

Net sales for the half-year ended September 30 rose by 11.54 per cent to Rs 16,975.67 crore as compared to Rs 15,218.87 crore in the corresponding period last year. Profit after tax for the half-year increased 41.92 per cent at Rs 4,295.42 crore as compared to Rs 3,026.71 crore in the corresponding period last year. PLF of coal-based stations was higher in the first six months of the year at 88.63 per cent as compared to 85.12 per cent for the corresponding period last year.

Grasim Q2 net up 50 pc on record performance by VSF business

Aditya Birla Group's flagship Grasim Industries today recorded a 50 per cent surge in consolidated net profit to Rs 620 crore for the quarter ended September 30, against Rs 414 crore a year ago, buoyed by a record performance of its Viscose Staple Fibre (VSF) business. But, the performance of the VSF business has been outstanding. In fact, it has clocked a record profit during the quarter," Grasim's whole-time Director D D Rathi told reporters here. Operating profit of the VSF business went up by 81 per cent during the quarter to Rs 315.6 crore as compared to Rs 174.3 crore during the corresponding period last fiscal. The business, which contributed 23 per cent of its total revenue, clocked a gross profit of Rs 294.7 crore during the quarter, recording a whopping 81 per cent hike.

Jindal Saw posts 89% jump

Steel pipes maker Jindal Saw on Saturday posted an 89.34 per cent jump in net profits to Rs 90.07 crore for the quarter ended September 30 as compared to Rs 47.57 crore for the corresponding period last fiscal. Total income of the company increased 25.45 per cent to Rs 1,430.53 crore for three-month period as against Rs 1,140.29 crore in the same period a year ago, it said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Dena Bank's Q2 jumps 34%

Dena Bank's Q2 jumps 34 pc State-run Dena Bank on Saturday registered a 34.03 per cent jump in net profit at Rs 92.15 crore for the quarter ended September 30, against Rs 68.75 crore for the same period last fiscal. Total income of the company increased 27.34 per cent to Rs 764.49 crore as against Rs 600.31 crore a year ago, the public sector bank informed the BSE.
