Bharti Airtel Q2 net rises 27% on record subscriber additions
Just about meeting Street forecasts, India’s largest wireless operator Bharti Airtel on Friday announced a 27% jump in net profit to Rs 2, 046 crore despite a forex loss of Rs 586 crore for the quarter ended September 2008, against Rs 1,613 crore in the year-ago period. A record addition of over 8 million subscribers during the period (the highest by any telco in any quarter), expansion of network to remote areas and lower tariffs saw the company’s revenues surge 42% to Rs 9,020 crore.
This improved the company’s market share in the fiercely-competitive wireless subscriber space to 24.6% as on September 30, compared to 23.4% in the year-ago period. Bharti also accounted for 28.5% of the country’s wireless subscriber additions during this period. EBITDA climbed 37% to Rs 3,699 crore. However, there are several blips in Bharti’s performance. The company’s EBITDA margin, which is an indicator of its profitability, fell to 41% compared with 42.8% in the year-ago quarter. Besides, if considered on a sequential (quarter-on-quarter) basis, Bharti’s performance is anything but impressive: Net profit for Q2 was up by a mere 1% against Q1FY09, while revenues grew 6.3%. The margins for the mobile business declined to 30.2% compared to 30.7% in the quarter ended June. Average revenue per user (ARPU), too, fell 4% (q-o-q) to Rs 335 from Rs 350 in March-June quarter. On a year-on-year basis, ARPU shrank 8%. Additionally, the minutes of usage fell to 526 minutes per customer when compared to 534 minutes during the previous quarter in the same year. Some analysts termed Bharti’s performance as being ‘below expectations.’ Bharti Airtel shares closed at Rs 649, up 5.5 % from Thursday’s close of Rs 615.05 on BSE................More @ the Topic Link.

red to Rs 257.43 crore last year, although the Mumbai-based company said the two quarters weren't comparable due to a change in accounting policies. Its revenue in the same period rose 45% to Rs 1,958.9 crore due to rise in fuel prices, Tata Power said in its statement announced after the results. "Our half yearly results reiterate continued stability of the company's operations. The company has organized loans for all its key projects and that mitigates the effect of the recent global financial crisis," said MD Prasad Menon. "We continue our focus on sustainable and renewable energy spanning wind power, hydro and geothermal. Some of our recent associations and growth plans have been focussed around this effort," he added. During the quarter, Tata Power announced its partnership with the Royal Government of Bhutan to develop the 114 megawatt hydroelectric power project over Dagachhu through Druk Green Power Corp and acquired a 26% stake in the project.

Sensex gains 248 pts as IT stks end on a high, Results
The market had some positive triggers today. First, a fairly steady trend on the Asian bourses gave the participants something to cheer about. Information technology, metal and FMCG stocks rallied higher on strong buying support and the Sensex moved past 10,300 in morning trade.
Stockometer
And then, when the market appeared to be losing steam, Reserve Bank of India cut repo rate by 100 basis points to 8%. This time, stocks cutting across sectors vaulted higher and lifted the Sensex past 10,500 to a high of 10,538.05. However, amid high volatility, the Sensex gave up its gains and very nearly slipped into the red in mid afternoon trade before it rallied again on some strong buying in the final hour.
Top gainers
Finally, the BSE barometer ended the session at 10,223.09, up 247.74 points or 2.48% over its previous closing mark. The Nifty, which tumbled into the negative territory to 3058.05 from a high of 3238.40, settled at 3122.80 with a sharp gain of 48.45 points or 1.58%.

ONGC gained around half a per cent. Tata Motors finished with a marginal gain.
BHEL went down by 8.2% to Rs 1096.40 on fears of a fall in revenues to high raw material costs. Grasim Industries lost nearly 8%. DLF ended lower by 6.4%. ACC declined 6.1%. Mahindra & Mahindra eased by 5.35%. Tata Power (down 3.7%) and Reliance Infrastructure (down 1.85%) also declined sharply. Reliance Communications, Hindustan Unilever and Sterlite Industries also ended weak, albeit with less pronounced losses.
Nifty stock HCL Technologies spurted nearly 9%. Sun Pharmaceuticals, SAIL and Tata Communications gained 6.5% - 6.75%. Cairn India and Siemens moved up by around 5.4%. ABB, Reliance Power, Punjab National Bank and Power Grid Corporation also closed on a positive note.
